Stephanie Tubbs Jones
September 10, 1949 – August 20, 2008
With the recent passing of congressional representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio), we lost a progressive leader who championed women's rights, civil liberties, equality and reproductive rights. Tubbs Jones was the first African American woman elected to Congress in Ohio, and was serving her 5th term, after being recently re-elected with 83% of the vote. As a judge and civil rights leader in her hometown of East Cleveland, Tubbs Jones worked tirelessly for the poor and underserved and in Congress, co-sponsored legislative efforts to broaden healthcare coverage for the low and middle class and was a leader in the investigation into predatory lending. Senator Barack Obama described her as a “fearless friend” and an “unyielding advocate.” We will miss her. - Tribute by Jillian Kinzie
